My Opinion About AnimeVideoArchive:
The one thing that piques my interest about Anime Video Archive is the promise of exclusive content. It's not every day you come across a toon archive delivering this sort of thing and it almost seems unbelievable. Once inside the site you realize that what is being offered is a blend of exclusive and non-exclusive content, but believe me, this is a hell of a lot better than what you'll find on most site, which basically contain content cloned across several anime sites.
I'm not sure how "eccentric" the actual content is, but the members' area has a rather arty design and an unusual layout. In fact, there aren't any thumbnail previews for the movies, which strikes me as a little unusual. Instead, there is an A to Z list of the videos. It gives the appearance of organization, but I wouldn't say that the members' area is a tease, after all, who gets turned on by lists? The site could use a few images to give a little flavour or at least an enticing push. There are some featured videos, but again, these are profiled as descriptions and without accompanying pictures.
At the top of the page, you'll see two links. One will take you to XXX plugin bonuses and the other to a page with at least a dozen different bonuses. This second area is called "Gold Bonuses". You will have to enter your username and password again, but once you do a world of games, flash toon, erotic stories, photo and video galleries, chats and more plugins open up to you. Both bonus area offer a great deal more than I initially bargain for, but Anime Video Archive doesn't do so bad all on its own.
So far, there are 126 videos. There aren't any real browse tools per se. You can find titles using the alphabetical list, but there aren't content dates, so you can sort the offering from newest to oldest. There aren't any keywords or categories, either. Basically, you need to click a title, link to the video page and only then do you get any information.
The video pages are quite nice and informative, but it's too bad that you have to link to every video before you figure out the theme, the action, running time or spoken and subtitle languages. There are also some screencaps included so that you can preview the quality. However, I really didn't think the thumbnails did the movies any sort of justice.
While many anime sites offer a selection of scenes, Anime Video Archive delivers complete video features that end up averaging around 80 minutes. This is great and even better is that all the scenes are available on the page. Why I think this is great is because I've had the painful experience on other anime sites of having to track down scenes from specific movies. I like that they're all here on one single page. Anyhow, there isn't a full-length download, so the movies, which are divided into about three to four segments, are fairly quick to download.
There aren't any streams at all and AVI (1084kbps, 640x480) is the only format. I like this because I can transfer the files to a portable drive and hook it up to my television, but I know some people might like to have streams available to keep their hard drive clean.
Final Verdict:
I loved the fact that there is some exclusive content, at least exclusively leased videos, although I would prefer to be better informed about which movies are and are not exclusive to the site. The site claims that everything is exclusive, but contradicts itself in several places by explaining that it's actually a blend of exclusive and non-exclusive content. Videos are easy to download and many are in their original language (dominantly Japanese) with English subtitles, which makes for an even better experience. The themes are varied, but the site doesn't offer the ability for members to suss out their favourites. Despite some poor layout choices and the lack of any really exciting or even enticing design elements, I enjoyed the collection on Anime Video Archive.
